We are very pleased and excited to announce that we acquired a Derby office in January 2012.
Although historically we have always been based in north Nottinghamshire and north Derbyshire, extending south to both Derby and Nottingham has always been a long term aim of Elliot Mather LLP. We have strong connections with professional and commercial colleagues based in and around these cities. Furthermore, with both cities being home to significant courts such as the County and Crown courts, as well as the employment tribunal based in Nottingham we regularly appear in these cities.
Despite our interest in Derby, we knew that opportunities would be rare to acquire a firm which shared our traditional values. This is why we are excited to have had the opportunity to acquire Taylor Simpson and Mosley.
The practice was founded in 1774, with one of the partners being the fourth generation of his family to serve as a solicitor. Over this time, it has developed an enviable reputation for providing quality legal services to individuals, families and trusts, focusing on conveyancing, probate and family law from its offices initially in St Marys Gate and now at 44 Friar Gate. Because of its reputation, we have decided to continue practising in Derby under the name “Taylor Simpson and Mosley”.
Since we acquired the practice, we have moved to strengthen its personnel. Because of its expertise in wills, probates and trust work, Alastair Seel (Head of Probate) has moved to take control of the office on a full time basis. Alastair previously worked for Taylor Simpson and Mosley; another example of the close connection between the two businesses.
Michael Mallender remains with the business as a Consultant. Having qualified as a solicitor in May 1965, Michael has spent a lifetime serving the community in Derby. A former clerk to the Commissioners of Inland Revenue, he has vast experience of both probate and trust law, and continues to sit on the board of a number of high profile local trusts and charities.
Completing the Probate team is a new appointment, Martin Salt, who joins us from another Derby firm.
Matthew Macefield has been employed by the firm for over 10 years. He has been appointed Senior Associate with our practice, and is responsible for residential conveyancing at the office. Mary White completes the team, responsible for family and children law.
The whole team is complemented by secretaries and support staff many of whom have been with the firm for many years.
Managing Partner, Paul Hollyer commented that “Acquiring Taylor Simpson and Mosley strengthens our whole business. We have been joined by committed and experienced lawyers, with additional skills and experience, as well as providing us with access to an important business centre. It benefits all of our employees because it increases our ability to bid for and gain contracts for the provision of publicly funded legal services in crime and family work. Finally, because we have extended the experience and knowledge of our staff, this acquisition also benefits our clients and our professional colleagues.”
Paul added that “We are here to help our clients by being committed to providing cost effective solutions to a wide range of legal problems and transactions at affordable rates.”
We are already planning to increase our range of services in Derby. We have many clients based in the area, and this will enable us to assist them from a more local office. It also provides us with the opportunity to extend our Mediation service, Dove Mediation, into the area, and to strengthen our existing relationships with accountants, bankers and agents. We have always had a presence in the local police courts, and this will enable us to seek membership of the local Magistrates’ Court duty solicitor rota.
Paul concluded that “Derby is an important first step for us to providing an integrated service for our clients”. He suggested that more acquisitions may follow
and that the next logical step would be a move into Nottingham City.
