One of Derby’s longest established law firms is set to extend the range of services provided to clients through a merger with a leading East Midlands law firm.

Taylor Simpson & Mosley, which can trace its’ roots back to 1778, has  merged with Elliot Mather LLP, one of the biggest law firms in Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire, with offices in Chesterfield, Mansfield and Matlock.

The newly merged firm will operate under the name of Elliot Mather LLP, continuing to serve clients in the Derby area from Taylor Simpson & Mosley’s existing offices on Friar Gate. With additional staff set to move to the Derby office, the firm now has fourteen LLP members and over 100 staff providing a comprehensive range of legal services for both business and personal clients.

Paul Hollyer, the Managing Partner of Elliot Mather, regards the two firms as being ideal partners, with both being underpinned by the same values, each seeing the merger as being an opportunity to provide significant benefits to clients in both Derby and the wider region.

Mr Hollyer said “Elliot Mather has grown significantly in recent years, and as we already have an established commercial client base in the Derby area, the acquisition of a Derby office is key to our plans for further development. We had been looking for some time for a suitable partner, and Taylor Simpson and Mosley’s plans for growth were consistent with our own.”

“Taylor Simpson & Mosley has always enjoyed an outstanding reputation in the private client field, reflected by the fact that the family has acted for generations of the same families. In this respect, we are particularly pleased to have retained the services of Michael Mallender, who recently celebrated fifty years with the firm and will ensure continuity of service to Taylor Simpson & Mosley’s existing clients, alongside Alastair Seel, a former employee of the firm who has returned to head up the Derby office.”

“We feel the merger of the two firms will mean we can offer a great deal more to our Derby clients. As a full service law firm, we will compliment the existing strengths of the Derby office with services in all areas of commercial and contentious law, and we look forward to providing our services to businesses and individuals locally.”

Mr Hollyer also indicated that further expansion is planned. “The Derby office is the first step in building on our profile in our traditional markets in the north of the two counties we serve, and further potential mergers are actively being discussed with firms in both Derby and Nottingham.”
