Elliot Mather Appoints First Non-Lawyer as Designated LLP Member

We are delighted to announce the appointment of a new designated LLP Member – Alan Grant.

Elliot Mather demonstrate growth and success as they announce the recent appointment of Alan Grant as a Designated LLP Member. Alan is the first non-lawyer in the firm to be appointed as a Designated LLP Member, with his focus being on the strategic and operational aspects of the LLP.

Alan has been integral in the development and growth of the business in recent years, after having joined Elliot Mather in 2016 as Chief Operations Officer. With over 15 years management and leadership experience within the legal, regulatory and insurance sectors he quickly made himself invaluable to the firm.  Since he joined Elliot Mather, he has planned and coordinated office relocations in three of the Firm’s locations, and was also instrumental in the smooth installation of a new IT system in 2017.

Having started his career in the legal sector, before experiencing the regulatory, insurance and actuarial sectors, Alan has developed both a passion and flair for managing and developing the Practice, with his key areas of responsibility being Finance, IT, HR, Marketing, and Business Development.

Commenting on his recent appointment as Designated LLP Member, Alan said: “It is a pleasure to be part of a business that recognises the need for diverse skills. I believe my skillset compliments those of the existing Designated Members. I am excited for the future of Elliot Mather and for the staff being developed to continue our success and growth. I am grateful for the experiences I have obtained in different professional industries and look forward to the challenges within the legal sector.”

In his new role, Alan will retain overall responsibility for Finance, HR, IT, Marketing and Admin but will also shift his emphasis to the strategic development of the firm.

Julie Page, Managing Partner and LLP Member said: “From the day Alan joined Elliot Mather, he quickly made himself indispensable as he brought with him a range of skills and experience gained from outside the legal sector.   Not only has Alan dealt successfully with a number of key operational issues around IT and office premises, he has also worked alongside the existing Designated Members to set the strategic direction of the firm.

We believe the appointment of our first non-lawyer Designated Member reflects our belief that if law firms are to grow and develop, the Senior Leadership Team needs a wide and varied skill set that goes beyond legal skills.   We believe Alan brings those additional skills to Elliot Mather and we want him to feel integral to the Firm’s future development.”

Julie Page

LLP Member and Head of Department

Julie joined Elliot Mather as a Trainee Solicitor in 1992 having studied for a Law Degree at the University of East Anglia and completed her Legal Practice Course at Chester. Throughout her legal career she has worked almost exclusively within the Criminal Department at our offices in Mansfield, Matlock and now Chesterfield.

Julie has been a member of the Duty Solicitor Scheme for over 20 years and has represented hundreds of clients either detained at a police station or appearing in the Magistrates and Crown Courts across the East Midlands. She has advised and represented clients charged with everything from minor road traffic matters to extremely serious allegations including rape, drug supply and murder. Julie particularly enjoys representing young people who, for reasons often beyond their control, find themselves in the Criminal Justice System. It is here that her intervention can often have the greatest impact.

In 2017 Julie assumed the role of Managing Partner having been Deputy Managing Partner since 2013. Working closely with our Chief Operations Officer Alan Grant and our Deputy Managing Partner Natalia Delgado, she is responsible for setting the strategic aims of Elliot Mather LLP and helping to steer the Firm in the direction of those aims. This is an exciting and challenging role especially as Elliot Mather continues to grow and expand into new markets.

As part of her Management responsibilities Julie is the Firm’s Compliance Officer for Legal Practice meaning she has responsibility for the firm's risk management systems and controls. She is also our Training Principle and as such, has responsibility for overseeing the development of our Trainee Solicitors. Elliot Mather has always recognised, not only the importance, but also the strong business case for recruiting, training and retaining the lawyers of the future.
